Congratulations to our 5-a-side football team who played really well at the tournament on Saturday 26 February.

Bi-annual Scout Service at West Church

Our Scout service for all sections will be held on Sunday 6th March in West Church. Cubs should aim to be in the Cub hall from 6.15pm. Please ensure uniform is neat and tidy, including activity trousers, and a washed and pressed scarf, please.

Parents are very welcome to join us for this service and you will have an opportunity to hear the Cubs singing, and also see the contributions from the Squirrels, Beavers and Scouts too.

Night hike replaces sponsored walk

Cubs on Friday 4th March will be in the form of a night hike starting at Pickie Cafe and ending at Crawfordsburn Scout Centre. We will be meeting at Pickie at 6.30pm and finishing at 8.50pm at Crawfordsburn. The hike will finish with a barbecue at the Scout Centre. Please ensure you bring good outdoor shoes, a waterproof coat and a small torch. If you need to you can also bring a small day sack with a bottle of water and something to sustain you on the walk.

Cubs district 5-a-side football

UPDATE: The Cubs 5-a-side football has been moved forward from 2pm to 1.30pm. First kick-off will still be at 2pm though, but we will definitely have to be complete by 4pm.

The Cubs district 5-a-side football will be held on Saturday 26th February in Bangor Castle Leisure Centre from 2pm to 4.30pm.
Trials will be held this Friday 18th and next Friday 25th. If you want to represent 7th then be prepared to try out.

No Cubs Friday 11th February

There will be no Cubs tonight for the half-term break. We will be back next week (18th) at 6.45pm as usual.

New Year at Cubs

Cubs start back on Friday 7th January 2011. We had planned a visit from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds but due to illness we have had to reschedule. Instead we will be completing some badgework  and organising a fundraising event for the near future. See you there!

Christmas Arrangements

Thank you to those who brought along things to sell at last week’s fair and to those who turned up on Saturday to take part or help out.

Our last night before Christmas is 10th December and we return to Cubs on Friday 7th January.

If you were not asked to bring anything to the Hallowe’en party could I ask you to bring along something tomorrow night – maybe a few sweets, crisps or something similar. As it it will be a short time at the end of the night less rather than more will do the trick.

In addition, on Sunday there will be a district Cub Christmas Service at 2.15pm (until 3.30pm) in St Philip and St James Parish Church, Church Road, Holywood. We will be collecting pet food for our hamper which is for the animals at Assisi animal shelter this year and the collection is for Aaron House, a home for young adults with learning difficulties. We would be very pleased if we could have a good turnout and even better if you would like to join us for the service.

Sixers & Seconders’ Camp

The regular Pack Holiday will be held at Ganaway B.B. Camp from 20th – 22nd May. All Cubs are invited to this camp and they will be staying mostly in dorms and sleeping on bunk beds. There are modern shower toilet facilities, full kitchen and a large games hall. On the Saturday we plan to organise a bus to take us to the Aquarium at Portaferry.

Additionally I have booked the weekend 10th – 12th June at Slievenaman Schoolhouse for a Sixers and Seconders’ Camp. This is where I started my camping life as a Cub 34 years ago. The facilities there are a good deal more basic than Ganaway and have changed only slightly since my time there.

The schoolhouse is a mid 19th century country schoolhouse with a schoolmaster’s house attached. The school is used for games and sleeping larger groups, and the house is where we plan to sleep and eat. There are no beds so it will a case of bringing a karrimat, inflatable mattress, or something similar and sleeping on the floor. Food will be cooked on the gas stove in the kitchen and on small camp stoves outside. Activities will be based around hill walking in the Slieve Meelmore / Slieve Bearnagh / Hare’s Gap area.

The weekend will be more basic and therefore cheaper than a residential centre but may still be in the £25 range. The reason for this email is to let you know well in advance what the possible costs might be so that you can plan ahead. The pack holiday at Ganaway will be in the range £35 – £38 and then three weeks later, Slievenaman at £25. Also you may need to think about some stout outdoor shoes or boots closer to the time and possibly a sleeping mat. Try to borrow as much as you can rather than buying; we will also try to bring some additional equipment from other sources to limit costs.

Because of when the Easter holiday falls next year we were limited in when we could plan the Sixers and Seconders’ Camp and preferred to bring it into June rather than back into March. The rain should be warmer in June.

If you have a Cub who is a Sixer or Seconder and is interested in this camp you can pay £5 a month from now until April / May to build up the £25 needed.

Map reader badge begins tonight

Back after two weeks rest, you should be ready to get stuck in to some map reading with Hathi. Try to remember a notebook and pen as you may have something to prepare at home for next week.

No Cubs for two weeks

There will be no Cub Pack nights on Friday 29th October or on Friday 5th November. Cubs will resume again on Friday 12th November at 6.45pm.

Because we have so many new leaders starting in the Scout Group this year, we have organised a introductory social night on Friday 5th November.
